Amanda Scott, the head girls basketball coach at Dawson Springs High School, was among those impacted by the December 10 tornado that devastated her community. During a recent game broadcast on WPKY, Scott sat down with Dennis Stephens and Bob Hayes and reflected on the time since the tornado hit. She said Dawson Springs is a very small, close-knit community, and seeing the tornado’s destruction that night just hits you in the gut.

She said the tornado left her family’s home with significant damage. However, she added they were lucky because they still have a home.

Scott said it was hard to make progress in the days following the tornado because on her side of Dawson Springs they didn’t have running water, heat, or electricity. She said thanks to the donations and the hard work of utility crews, they were able to make some progress in a short time.

She added everyone pitched in to help, including sports teams.

Scott says she was glad they had the last two weeks to mentally recover from the tornado before they started practice back this week. She said it’s been an emotionally hard time for her team because they were worried about two of the boys on the basketball team who lost their home. The tornado also occurred just weeks after the tragic death of former basketball player Logan McKnight.

Scott said she hopes the residents that were displaced will return to Dawson Springs.

Scott said University of Kentucky’s Basketball Coach John Calipari came to Dawson Springs last Sunday and brought tennis shoes for all of the children who didn’t have them or were displaced. While in Dawson, he invited the basketball teams to come and watch his players practice, which she said was an amazing experience for them all and a positive step in the right direction for all of them to help in the recovery process.
