
Storylines are abundant for the boys’ Second Region All A Classic basketball tournament that begins Tuesday at various sites.
Lyon County snapped UHA’s eight-year run as All A champions last year. The Lyons are 7-4 but a perfect 5-0 against region teams in 2021-22. Lyon County will travel to Crittenden County Tuesday for a 7 pm matchup with the Rockets. Lyon hammered Crittenden 79-41 last Tuesday in Eddyville.
The other quarterfinal features the All A region debut of Heritage Christian Academy. The Hopkinsville private school applied for and was granted KHSAA membership over the summer. While HCA will not be available for postseason play until 2023-24, they can play in the All A Classic immediately.
Heritage Christian Academy (11-7) owns a 2-4 record against KHSAA schools this season, including one against Tuesday’s opponent Fort Campbell. The Warriors beat the Falcons (1-9) 52-38 last Tuesday. The quarterfinal game will be Tuesday at 7 pm on post.
The lower bracket semifinal will be Friday at 7:30 at University Heights Academy.
The upper bracket features Caldwell County making a trip to former district rival Livingston Central Tuesday at 6. Caldwell County (8-3) features the top scorer in the region in Jabrion Spikes at 29 points a game. Livingston Central brings a 2-8 record into the contest along with Max Downey and his 27 points per game average.
Neither Livingston Central nor Caldwell have ever won a boys’ All A region title.
The other upper bracket contest features Dawson Springs (1-7) hosting University Heights Academy (5-7) Tuesday at 6 pm. UHA has won 25 All A region titles.
The winners will meet in Tuesday’s first semifinals at 6 pm. The championship will be Saturday at 7 pm at UHA.
The region winner will play Breathitt County Thursday, January 27 at 8 pm at McBrayer Arena in Richmond. Breathitt (13-2) beat Hazard 64-58 Sunday to win the region title.
