After stopping a 10-game losing skid with a win over Calloway County last time out, the Christian County Colonels welcomed one of the top teams in the 4th Region to Colonel Gym on Monday night.
This season, Warren Central has only lost twice on the court, with another pair of defeats coming due to Covid forfeit. Additionally, the 12-4 Dragons had only lost to one in-state squad, with a double-overtime setback to Greenwood coming in their last game.
The Dragons jumped out to an 11-4 advantage after a 3-pointer by Omari Glover to force a Colonel timeout. Trailing by eight with just over two minutes left in the 1st, the Colonels got 3-pointers from Ja’Sean Riley and KJ Vaughn to close the gap. Breland Morrison’s 3-point play had Christian County within a point at 18-17 to end the quarter.
The Colonels took their first lead when Morrison scored in the lane and Jordan Miles followed with a 3 to start the 2nd quarter. Back-to-back buckets by Derrell Bateman put Christian County in front 26-21, but Warren Central was back in front by a basket with just over two minutes left in the half.
Enter Jayden Williams for the Colonels, with the senior drilling a pair of 3s in the final minute to take a 34-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.
There was a lid on the basket for the Colonels in the 3rd quarter, with layups and putbacks rolling off and the Dragons outscoring them 10-0 over the first four minutes.
Morrison scored on consecutive possessions for the Colonels, but Glover knocked down a jumper to give Warren Central a 48-43 edge with a quarter to play.
Christian County battled back to tie the game at 50-50 with 5:20 to play but didn’t score again until a Miles floater with 1:40 on the clock. The stretch proved decisive as the Dragons scored six straight to shut the door on the Colonels.
Christian County slips to 6-16 and will hope for better luck against another 4th-Region team on Tuesday when they travel to South Warren.
