A third quarter blitz turned out to be the difference for the Lyon County Lady Lyons Tuesday night in Smithland. Coming out to start the second half, Lyon County outscored Livingston Central 21-3 to blow open a seven point game on their way to a 63-36 win over the Lady Cardinals.
The Lady Lyons came “roaring” out of the game with a 9-1 run. Livingston Central would battle back and cut the lead to 15-12 at the end of the opening quarter.
The two teams played fairly close through the duration of the second quarter. Lyon County was able to extend the lead to 30-23 at the half. The Lady Lyons led by as many as 12 points in the first sixteen minutes of the game.
The trio of Rose Smith, Calista Collins, and Ella Defew had a big start for the Lady Lyons, scoring 25 of the 30 points in the opening half.
Aubrey Leahy helped keep Livingston within shouting distance in the first half. Leahy came up with 10 points for the Lady Cardinals.
Then came the third quarter, and then came the hammer drop from the Lyon County Lady Lyons. The Lyon defense limited Livingston Central to just three points in the quarter, while the offense rang up 21 points, as the Lady Lyons grabbed the game and ran, taking a 51-26 lead after three.
After the devastating third quarter blitz, it became simply a matter of the final score and getting some younger players some district action over the final eight minutes, as Lyon County cruised on out to the final 27 point margin.
Rose Smith led a trio of Lady Lyons in double figures with 17 points. Calista Collins added 17, while Ella Defew finished with 12 points.
Aubrey Leahy was the only Lady Cardinal to reach double figures with 13. Victoria Joiner added 7 for Livingston Central.
The win moves Lyon County to 13-11 overall and 3-3 in the 5th District.
Livingston Central falls to 7-15 and 0-6.
