Vereen Gardens has some terrific scenery to enjoy in a peaceful setting. (Larry Vaught Photo)
I’ve been to Myrtle Beach a lot of times at various times of year but never had discovered a hidden gem in the area until this week. I took my first trip to Vereen Gardens in Little River, which is only a few miles from Myrtle Beach before you get to the North Carolina state line.
It was a near-perfect day — sunshine, 65 degrees, no rain — when we headed out and it’s easy to locate Vereen Gardens right off Route 17 where the park has paths, wooden boardwalks, great scenery, salt marshes, and a lot of birds you can easily hear.
And get this — there is no entrance fee since this is not a state park. Donation boxes are available on the ground.
You can park at the entrance and take about a 1.5-mile walk to the gazebo that looks out over the Intercoastal Waterway or you can drive into Vereen Gardens and have a very short walk to the gazebo. Or you can use the area for a peaceful, scenic run like many were doing the day we visited.
There’s also a fishing pier where several local residents were trying their luck.
“If I catch something, great. If not, I just enjoy the sunshine, scenery and peace and quiet,” one woman told me. “It’s a great way just to sneak off from work and relax.”
The paths are easy to walk and well-marked so there’s no chance of getting lost on the 114-acre park. You can also see the historic Vereen Family Cemetery which has Revolutionary War. graves

Myself and my family would love to visit these gardens. We visit Myrtle Beach two or three times a year. We also enjoy getting out of the hustle and bustle . We are looking for places to enjoy the beach, animals and exploring woodlands, she’ll hunting. Children friendly. Can you please send more information.

My wife and I recently moved the area, Vereen is a hidden gem. I usually take my dog for walks there in the evening, he loves to try to catch the fiddler crabs that come out at that time of day.
We will be back in February. Cannot wait to visit again. Who knows, maybe I will see you
