The Lyon County Lyons can now begin planning for their opponent in the opening round of the UK Healthcare Boys’ Sweet 16 next week at Rupp Arena. The Lyons will take on John Hardin. The Bulldogs clinched their berth by taking down Elizabethtown 58-53 in overtime Tuesday night in the 5th Region tournament at Nelson County High School.

John Hardin will head into the Sweet 16 with a record of 25-9.

During the postseason, John Hardin picked up wins over Fort Knox and E-town in the 17th District tournament and then Taylor County, Bardstown, and E-town again in the 5th Region tournament.

John Hardin has won 9 of their last 10 games with the only loss being a 24 point blowout to Louisville Eastern. Outside of Eastern, the Bulldogs have losses to DeSales, Doss, Elizabethtown, Butler, LaRue County, George Rogers Clark, and Evangel Christian.

The other loss for John Hardin came at the hands of the one common opponent they have with the Lyons, that being Madisonville-North Hopkins. The Bulldogs lost to the Maroons 84-66 in the Madisonville-North Hopkins Holiday Classic. Lyon County beat the Maroons 71-66 in mid-January and then routed the Maroons 92-72 in the 2nd Region semifinals.

The two teams will meet at 1:30 pm eastern time Thursday, March 17 at Rupp Arena.

John Hardin’s last trip to the Sweet 16 was back in 2019 when they lost a one-point decision to Campbell County.
