The Caldwell County Special Olympics basketball team brought home gold medals from the state tournament in Louisville.

The Caldwell squad defeated the Louisville Storm 33-10 in its first game on Saturday, then overcame a 10-0 deficit to defeat the North Kentucky Orange Crush 23-14 for the championship in its division.

“Very proud of this group,” Caldwell coach Roy Gene Rogers said on social media. “They didn’t complain about the sprints that Lisa (Hawkins) and Jared (Nelson) had put into our practice and it paid off in both games as we were in better condition than the other teams.

“No other team in the state tournament had cheerleaders so we were Special in that area as well. Congratulations to our cheerleaders and team. Bringing Gold back to Caldwell County.”

Some 34 total teams competed at the Mid-America Sports Complex, totaling over 400 athletes.
