It was a short trip to Mortons Gap for the Todd County Central Rebels Thursday evening. The Rebels hung up 23 runs on the scoreboard as they routed the Storm 23-4 in a three-inning contest.
The Rebels took advantage of 13 walks from four different Storm pitchers in building their offensive onslaught. Todd Central also pounded out 11 hits in their three at-bats.
Todd Central got things going early in the game. The Rebels used three walks, two singles, and a Hopkins Central error to put up four runs in the top of the first. The big hit in the inning came from Preston Rager, who connected for a two-run single.
The same pattern would lead to the Rebels tacking on five runs in the top of the 2nd to push the lead out to 9-0. Tanner Farmer and Dylan Baker had RBI singles, while Will Kearns connected for a two-run double.
Hopkins Central tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs off a Todd County Central error to trim the lead to 9-4.
Then the bottom truly fell out of the bucket for the Storm. The first six Rebel batters all reached base in the top of the third. Then, after a fly-out, the next six batters reached base. By the time Central was able to get out of the inning, the Rebels had plated 14 runs and blown the game wide open.
Central would score a run in the bottom of the third but it was not enough to keep the game from ending due to the run rule.
Tanner Farmer led the Rebels going 3-3 with a double and four RBIs. Will Kearns finished 1-3 with a double, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Preston Rager was 2-4 with 2 RBIs and four runs scored. Devin Schutt ended up 2-3 with 2 RBIs and four runs scored.
Jacob Brandon pitched all three innings for the Rebels. He gave up four runs, just one of them earned, striking out six and walking only one.
