If the first week of the season is any indication, the Christian County Lady Colonels are a team that will have to be seriously dealt with in the 2022 softball season. Christian County traveled to Owensboro Saturday and picked up a couple of wins over 3rd Region opponents to begin the season at 4-0.

In the opener, the Lady Colonels used a four-run bottom of the 5th inning to come from behind and take a 6-4 win over Breckinridge County. The Lady Tigers used the long ball in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. Morgan Tabor hit a solo home run in the top of the first, while Hannah Carter led off the top of the 2nd with a home run of her own.

The Lady Colonels converted two walks and a Breckinridge County error into two runs in the bottom of the 3rd to tie things up at 2-2.

In the top of the 5th, Breckinridge County loaded the bases and then scored on a bases-loaded walk and a passed ball, taking a 4-2 lead.

Pickle Winkler led off the bottom of the 5th with a single and then stole second base. Riley Hancock reached base on a dropped third strike, allowing Winkler to advance to third and then score on an error to cut the lead to 4-3. A fielder’s choice and another Lady Tiger error allowed the Lady Colonels to plate two more. Christian County would add another run later in the inning, again on an error by Breckinridge County.

Christian County used only three hits to get their six runs. Allie Houchens had two hits and Pickle Winkler had one.

Riley Hancock picked up the win in the circle, going six innings, giving up three runs on six hits, striking out five while walking two.

In the second game of the day, Christian County again used a four-run inning to come from behind and pick up the win. This time it was a four-run 4th inning as they rallied to take a 9-6 win over Owensboro Catholic.

Christian County got the bats going early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. The big hits were an RBI double from Avery Adcock and an RBI single from Gracie Harned.

Catholic came back with a run in the bottom of the first and then hung up five runs on the board in the bottom of the second. The Lady Aces used five hits and a walk to generate the big inning and take a 6-3 lead.

Christian County cut two runs off the lead in the top of the 3rd on RBI singles from Aalaisha McGregor and Allie Houchens.

The big Lady Colonel rally in the 4th got started with a double from Pickle Winkler. Winkler would then score on a double from Avery Adcock, who came around on a single from Karlee Crick. Aalaisha McGregor would finish the rally with a two-run single.

From there it was simply a matter of Riley Hancock mowing em down to secure the win.

Avery Adcock led the way at the plate going 3-4 with 3 doubles, 2 RBIs, and 3 runs scored. Allie Houchens was 3-4 with a double and an RBI. Aalaisha McGregor was 2-4 with 3 RBIs.

Riley Hancock went 6 1/3 innings in relief, giving up four runs, three of them earned, striking out five while walking two.
