Seventh-grader Madilynn Smith gave her team its first lead with an RBI double in the first inning, added a two-run double in the fourth, and had a memorable performance Thursday as the Trigg County High School softball team routed host Kenwood 16-0 in four innings.
Smith, who went 4-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs, finished with a trio of two-baggers, seven total bases, and was one of seven Lady Wildcats to register a hit in the run-shortened victory. Trigg (3-1) has now recorded a shutout in all three of its 2022 wins, outscoring the competition 42-0 in those three games.
During its most recent blowout, TCHS scored seven runs in the third inning and six more in the fourth to end the game via mercy rule in Clarksville, Tennessee. The Knights committed eight errors and gave up 11 hits in defeat.
After MaKenna Hendricks doubled to start the game, Smith socked a two-out double to center field off Kenwood pitcher Alyssa Michael. The Wildcats added a couple more runs the next inning, when MaKenzie Yielding walked and scored on a triple from MaKenna Hendricks. That was immediately followed by a run-scoring RBI when Rylee Hendricks put the ball in play and made it 3-0.
The wheels came off completely for Kenwood in the top of third. Smith doubled to lead off the frame and scored on a single by Kiley Slone. Yielding then added a two-run single to make it 6-0 and Trigg County proceeded to score four more runs — all as a result of KHS miscues.
Trigg batted around before Kenwood recorded an out in the fourth inning, as Slone’s bases-loaded walk made it 16-0. Chandlar Wilson’s RBI double began the onslaught during the frame. Makenna Hendricks finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and RBI. She and Smith were the only two players with multi-hit performances.
Avery Wade (3-1) made her fourth start of the season and made quick work of Kenwood. She struck out eight, allowed just two hits, and walked one in four innings. Wade now has 26 strikeouts in 16 innings of work this season. Her counterpart, Michael, walked six and registered just one strikeout in four innings. Of the 16 runs she allowed, just nine were earned.
