The Christian County Colonels were right in the thick of their game with the Bowling Green Purples until the fifth inning rolled around. Then things got sideways in a hurry for Christian County. Bowling Green ripped open and closed out a 2-1 game with a nine-run inning to claim an 11-1 five inning win over the Colonels.
The Colonels actually got on the board first, plating a run in the top of the 2nd inning. Carter Sholar led off the inning with a single to center. After a strikeout, Hayden Hunt reached on a bunt single that advanced Sholar to second base. The pair advanced to second and third on a Bowling Green error, with Sholar then scoring on a bunt from Bobby Irving.
The Purples came back to even things up in the bottom half of the inning. Bowling Green got three straight singles to open the bottom half of the second, setting up a chance for a big inning. After a fly out to left, Trent Warden was able to score on a sac fly to right. But that would be the end of the rally, as Preston Phan was able to close out the inning with a strikeout.
The Purples would move to the lead a couple of innings later. Drew Isenberg reached base on a single. He would then advance on a passed ball and score on a Christian County error to give Bowling Green a 2-1 lead.
Meanwhile, after scoring a run in the second inning, the Colonels struggled to get anything going against Bowling Green pitching. Four different Purples’ pitchers would combine to set down the final 11 Christian County batters.
In the fifth, the Purples got things going with a walk, a single, and a sacrifice bunt to extend the lead to 3-1. Bowling Green would then load the bases on a single and a walk setting up the big inning. Blake Ginter drove in a run with a single and then the shot that effectively put the Colonels away. Patrick Forbes then took a 3-2 pitch and drove a grand slam over the centerfield fence to blow the lead out to 8-1.
Bowling Green would then re-load the bases and wrap up the game with back-to-back RBI singles.
Carter Sholar, Bobby Irving, and Hayden Hunt were each 1-2 for the Colonels in the game. Irving drove in the only run, which was scored by Carter Sholar.
Bowling Green would out-hit the Colonels 13-3, as Christian County did not get a hit after the second inning.
Preston Phan was the starting pitcher for the Colonels and was tagged with the loss.
Christian County drops to 14-3 on the season and now gets ready for Friday night’s huge showdown with Christian County.
