Tuesday’s district softball game in Eddyville featured Lyon County’s upperclassmen against Trigg County’s youngsters.  With each of Lyon’s seniors playing a key role, the Lady Lyons held off the Lady Wildcats 12-9 to win its sixth straight game in the series dating back to 2019.

Jaiden Capello’s squeeze bunt in the sixth inning scored to go-ahead run for the Lady Lyons, who entered the frame tied 8-8. It was part of a two-hit night for the senior.

Fellow senior Kendra Richardson also contributed an RBI single to the winning cause, and Hadlie Butler added a hit and scored two runs.

Lyon County was playing without fifth-year senior Calista Collins and her .568 batting average. Collins missed the game due to a prior academic commitment. Jenna Coursey (.345) was also held out for precautionary measures but should be good to play this weekend.

Lyon County struck for four runs in the third inning. Butler and Emma West led off with singles. After a Trigg error allowed the game’s first run to score, Lauren Davis followed with an RBI single for a 2-0 lead. Richardson followed Ryan Graham’s RBI groundout with a run-scoring hit to left.

Trigg County got three runs back just as quick in the fourth inning. Rylee Hendricks led off with her third home run of the season. Audrey Alexander followed with a double and Lillie Cortner added a bloop single. Madilyn Smith scored Alexander on a sacrifice fly.

With the bases loaded, MaKenna Hendricks hit a soft liner to second base. Butler made an off-balance throw, but it wasn’t in time which allowed Cortner to score. However, a Trigg runner was cut down trying to score from second on the play which was slow to develop.

Up 4-3, West added a two-run double and Lilly Perry followed with an RBI single.

Staring an 8-5 deficit entering the sixth inning, Trigg continued to cut into the Lyon lead. Rylee Hendricks followed a pair of walks with an RBI double. Alexander added a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout by Cortner tied the game.

That set the stage for Capello’s squeeze bunt that gave Lyon a 9-8 lead in the home half of the sixth. Bailey Breitrick’s third hit of the game was of the infield variety and drove in a run.

Perry plated two runs with a single to put the home team up 12-8.

Rylee Hendricks’ third hit of the game was her second double and third RBI of the night. Perry then settled down to retire the final batter.

Perry got the win in relief by pitching the final two innings. She was also 3-for-5 at the dish with four runs knocked in. West added two hits and two RBIs, and Breitrick, batting ninth, scored three times off three hits.

Hendricks had three of Trigg’s seven hits, and Cortner had a pair of RBIs.

Avery Wade struck out four and allowed 12 runs in the circle for Trigg, but seven of Lyon’s runs were unearned with four Trigg errors pushing Wade’s pitch count higher than it should have been.

Trigg County (6-8) will continue its three-game district stretch Thursday with a home game against Crittenden County and a Friday contest at Livingston Central.

Lyon County (10-7) will visit Christian County Thursday before heading to Owensboro for Saturday pool play in the All A Classic State Tournament.
