For just over half the game Friday night, the Christian County Colonels were keeping the McCracken County Mustangs right there in sight. Elijah Underhill had given up just one run and the Colonels were in the thick of the battle with a team that has reached the state title game two years in a row.

However, the Mustangs then showed why they are one of the teams expected to make a run at the 2022 championship as they scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to chase Underhill and extend their lead to 5-0 on the way to a 9-1 home field win.

Underhill had the Mustangs fully under control until the bottom of the fourth. The Mustangs finally broke through when Jude Farley drove in a run with a double to center to give McCracken a 1-0 lead.

The Mustang bats heated up even more in the bottom of the fifth. McCracken used a pair of doubles and a pair of singles to push in four runs and ran their lead out to 5-0. Underhill would leave the game for Christian County with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Colonels would get one of the runs back in the top of the sixth when Hayden Hunt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

McCracken County came back out in the bottom half of the inning and put the game away by scoring four more runs to take a 9-1 lead.

The Colonels then went quietly in the top of the seventh as the Mustangs closed out the win.

Christian County scored their one run on six hits in the game. Elijah Underhill, Preston Phan, Josh Snorton, Brylle Javier, Carter Sholar, and Gage Montes, all had one hit each for the Colonels.

Underhill, who was tagged with the loss, went 4 2/3-innings, giving up five runs on nine hits, striking out six while walking three.

The loss ends a nine game winning streak for the Colonels, who fall to 23-4 with the loss. The Colonels are slated to play Paducah Tilghman and Calloway County on Saturday at Tilghman.
