Two games that came down to the final inning and neither went the way of the Christian County Lady Colonels Saturday in Owensboro. The Lady Colonels saw Boonville rally in the bottom of the 7th to steal away with a 6-5 walk-off win and then had a 7th inning rally of their own come up just short as they fell 4-3 to the Daviess County Lady Panthers.
The game against the Lady Pioneers entered the seventh with the Lady Colonels up 4-3. They added what seemed to be a critical insurance run when Pickle Winkler tripled and then scored on a one-out single from Riley Hancock, giving Christian County a 5-3 lead.
A Christian County error opened the door in the bottom of the 7th and Boonville stepped right on through. After the error, back-to-back singles cut the lead to 5-4. Christian County intentionally walked the bases loaded to set up a force play at any base.
Boonville tied the game on a single to center but had the game-winning run thrown out at the plate on a throw from Pickle Winkler to LaiLai McGregor. Another intentional walk loaded the bases. Boonville then walked off the win with pinch-hit single to end the game.
Pickle Winkler was 3-3 with a triple, an RBI, and two runs scored. Avery Adcock finished 2-4 with an RBI.
Gracie Harned went 6 1/3 in the circle giving up six runs, only four of them earned, striking out nine while walking three.
The second game saw the Lady Colonels enter the final inning trailing the Lady Panthers, who are #8 in the latest KHSAA RPI ratings, by a score of 4-1.
Chloe Craft led off the inning with a single and then scored on a double from Pickle Winkler to cut the lead to 4-2. Riley Hancock then singled to give the Lady Colonels runners on the corners with no outs.
Hancock would then score on a sac fly from Avery Adcock to cut the lead down to a single run at 4-3. Daviess County 8th grader Sophia Cain, who entered the game with an astonishing 0.45 ERA was finally able to get out of the inning and the game by getting the next two batters to fly out.
Pickle Winkler, Riley Hancock, Karlee Crick, LaiLai McGregor, and Chloe Craft had one hit each for the Lady Colonels.
Riley Hancock took the loss in the circle. She went six innings, giving up four runs, three of them earned on eight hits, striking out three while walking only one.
The Lady Colonels did not help themselves in the field as they were charged with four errors in the game.
The two losses drop the Lady Colonels to 21-9 on the season. They are set to host Calloway County Monday evening.
