A pair of run-scoring doubles by Hadlie Butler and Jenna Coursey highlighted a crucial fourth inning Monday and helped the Lyon County High School softball squad overtake Crittenden County by a count of 15-3 in five innings.

It was just the second win in their last five games but more than enough to pull the Rockets even with Livingston Central in the 5th District standings. Both LCHS and the Cardinals are 4-1. Each has a district game remaining: Lyon County at Trigg County and Livingston at Crittenden County, both on May 11.

On Monday, the Lyons built an abrupt lead when Butler’s one-out fly ball led to a four-base error in the top of the first inning. The “Little League Homer” put the Rockets in a 1-0 hole. Lyon County kept it up in the second, taking advantage of another multi-base, two-run error, which gave LCHS a 3-0 lead with two outs. An RBI single on Calista Collins’ hard ground ball to third later made it 4-0.

Crittenden County finally got on the board in the bottom of the third on Hannah Jent’s two-out, three-run double, pulling the Rockets within 7-3 of the Lyons. But the aforementioned RBI doubles from Butler and Coursey, combined with other key contact by Collins, Emma West and Ryan Graham, led LCHS to a seven-run outburst in the frame and an eventual 14-3 lead in the contest.

Butler finished the evening 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. She was one of eight Lyons with at least one hit. Collins went 1-for-3 three with two runs, two RBIs and a walk. Coursey finished with a team-high three RBIs.

In the circle, Lilly Perry went the distance to get her 12th win in 21 starts. Perry (12-8) struck out two, issued a pair of walks, and scattered eight hits in the run-shortened game. All three runs allowed came on the same hit by Jent. Crittenden County’s Anna Boone (6-10) gave up nine hits and 14 runs to earn the defeat. Only five of the runs were earned, however, after the Rockets committed seven errors in defeat.
