If “seventeen only comes once in a lifetime,” like the popular Tim McGraw lyric goes, then the 2022 Christian County High School softball team is certainly embracing it. Behind an 11-0 victory Tuesday over Hopkinsville, the Colonels secured the 8th District Championship for an unprecedented 17th straight season.

LaiLai McGregor hooked her fifth home run of the season down the left field line and senior Riley Hancock pieced together a two-hit masterpiece to lead County to the five-inning triumph. McGregor’s homer was of the three-run variety and was by far the biggest swing of the night.

In the circle, Hancock (15-4) kept the Tigers off balance all night. She struck out eight of the 18 batters she faced, walked none and allowed a pair of singles to Kaitlyn Kaetzel and Shaniyah Straight. Hoptown also committed three errors in its first district final since 2019. Regardless, HHS (9-17) is still headed back to the 2nd Region Tournament.

As is Christian County (25-9), which also got solid performances from Karlee Crick (2-for-3, two RBIs), Gracie Harned (0-for-0, three walks, run), Pickle Winkler (1-for-4, run, RBI), Allie Houchens (two runs) and Kaleigh Shaw (0-for-2, run, walk, RBI).
