
Lyon County Post 68 is just one win away from claiming the Kentucky American Legion Baseball West Semi-State Tournament at Hopkins County Central High School in Mortons Gap.
Lyon is 2-0 in the double-elimination event after routing Madisonville Post 6 12-2 Tuesday night, then turning back Mayfield Post 26 11-4 on Wednesday.
Post 68 is now 17-10 this season.
Lyon County used a five-run second inning to build a 7-0 lead against Mayfield on Wednesday on the way to reaching the championship round.
Union County senior Isaac Phillips was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs for Post 68.
Cannon Sheffer, another Union senior, went the first four innings on the mound to pick up the win for Lyon County. He allowed one earned run on four hits before getting relief help from Weston Powell and Daniel Ramage.
Meanwhile, Owensboro Post 9 — the defending state champion — eliminated Madisonville Post 6 in Wednesday’s late game 5-2.
Owensboro (20-8) and Mayfield (9-18) will play an elimination game at 5 p.m. Thursday, with the winner advancing to face Lyon in the championship round at 8 p.m.
Whichever team that comes out of the loser’s bracket will have to defeat Lyon County twice to capture the semi-state championship.
The West Semi-State champion will advance to the State Finals in Bowling Green next week.
