The Todd County Central Rebels are now off to one of the best starts in the history of the school’s soccer program. The Rebels had to work extra but still managed to pick up a huge district win Thursday night, getting past Franklin-Simpson 2-1 in penalty kicks.
The win was the first for the Rebels over the Wildcats since the 2012 district championship game when Todd Central came away with a 3-0 victory.
The match Thursday night was a battle from the very beginning. Todd County broke the ice about 20 minutes in with a bit of an unusual play. Goalie Jonah Rager got a punt behind the Franklin-Simpson back line that Ricardo Garcia Sears was able to put in the net, giving Rager the credit for the assist and the Rebels a 1-0 lead.
That lead would still be in place as the two teams went to halftime.
The Wildcats tied the match in the second half on a long free kick that found its way into the goal. From there it was back-and-forth with neither team able to find the net again in regulation as time expired with a 1-1 tie.
That sent the district contest to penalty kicks. Todd Central’s Zack Robinson, Grady Reding, Trey Osborne, Chi Herrera, and Ivan Lopez all coverted their PK attempts.
The Wildcats made their first four, but the fifth attempt sailed high and the Rebels snagged the win.
Jonah Rager had a big night in goal for Todd Central, ending up with 12 saves on the night.
Todd Central now moves to 4-0-1 on the season. Up next for the Rebels is a road trip to Barren County Saturday afternoon.
