Aces Edge Colonels in Yet Another One-Goal Affair

8-20-settle

When Christian County and Owensboro Catholic meet on the soccer field, it’s likely to end with a one-goal margin. At least, coming into Saturday the last three meetings had done just that.

Make it four straight.

Brody Martin slipped home the go-ahead goal with 11 minutes left to give the Aces a 2-1 win over the Colonels Saturday next to the Stadium of Champions.

For the Owensboro Catholic junior, it was his second goal of the game and fifth of the season. Older brother Austin assisted on one of the goals, and Bryson Payne had the helper on the other.

For 67 minutes, the Aces held the 1-0 advantage as both team’s defenses were on point.

In the 68th minute, Leland Creamer threw a ball in for the Colonels near the front of their goal. Noah Davis headed it in the air and Brylle Javier redirected it into the net before it hit the ground.

But the enthusiasm was short-lived as Martin answered with the go-ahead goal a minute later to put the Aces back into the lead.

It was another great defensive effort for the Colonels. Despite falling to 3-2, they have allowed two goals or less in all five games. The Colonels allowed four goals a game last year.

The turnaround has been rousing for a Colonel program that was 2-32-3 in its previous 37 matches coming into the 2022 season.

Christian County will meet Hopkinsville in a district showdown Tuesday next to the Stadium of Champions.
