Murray Defense Puts Clamps on Colonels

8-29-lopez

Murray and Christian County have played some competitive soccer games through the years but two things usually define the outcome — Murray gets the win and the Colonels struggle to score.

The same storyline played out again Monday next to the Stadium of Champions as the Tigers picked up a 6-0 win — their eighth straight over the Colonels. Each of the first four games in the series was decided by three goals or less. Not so in the last four. But Christian County has scored just one goal in the eight meetings.

Murray’s defense held Christian County without a shot on goal for the contest while launching 27 shots of their own — 14 of those on goal.

Nate Wyatt got the scoring started with a left-footed blast at the top of the box eight minutes into the contest. Christian County’s defense was able to maintain and keep the Tigers at bay but Murray’s continued ability to win the ball at midfield put too much pressure on the defense.

Collier Crouch scored out front in the 26th minute to put Murray up 2-0. Cooper Cunningham tacked on a third goal five minutes later to give the Tigers a 3-0 advantage they would go on to enjoy at halftime.

Wyatt started the second half the same way he did the first with his second goal of the game.

Max Rosa would add a pair of goals in the final nine minutes to round out the scoring. He also had a pair of assists in the contest.

Murray improved to 6-1 and is 12-0-2 against Second Region schools dating back to a 2019 loss to Hopkinsville.

Christian County sees its record even up at 4-4. The Colonels will play at Trigg County Wednesday. That game was moved up a day since Trigg County had a football game moved to Thursday night.
