Lyon Completes First Season Sweep of Trigg in 16 Years

9-13-lyon

For Lyon County and Trigg County, the past decade of boys’ soccer has meant playing in a two-team district. The regular season games don’t factor into district tournament bracket placement — there are just two teams. The district tournament location alternates every year so the games don’t affect that. And both schools are guaranteed a trip to the region tournament every year. At least until Crittenden County or Livingston Central decides to play boys’ soccer.

All that’s left to play for in their regular season matchups is pride. Tuesday, Lyon County regained some pride as they handed Trigg County a 6-1 loss at Josh Nichols Field. Even though Lyon has taken three of the last four from Trigg, it’s the first time since 2007 that the Lyons have won consecutive games against their district rival and the first time since 2006 they swept the regular season series from the Wildcats.

Lyon County was the aggressors in the Tuesday matchup, putting two shots up in the first two minutes.

Lyon’s fourth shot of the game in the ninth minute came off the foot of Timothy Stewart who beat Trigg goalie Cam McCormick with the high shot for his 14th goal of the season.

Lyon County added a second goal when Walker Suitor got behind the Trigg defense and punched it in for a 2-0 lead.

Colt Bannister scored the first of his three goals when he drove down the middle of the defense and put the Lyons up 3-0.

Trigg got on the board in the 31st minute when a foul resulted in a penalty kick. Alex Hurt banged home the goal but Lyon still led 3-1.

Bannister added the next two goals, and Stewart closed out the scoring in the 67th minute for the final margin.

Trigg had some good looks early but couldn’t convert. The Lyons only had a 15-14 advantage in shots, but Jackson Crawford made nine saves in goal.

Lyon County improves to 4-9. A fifth win would be the most for the program in five years. They will try and get it Thursday when they host University Heights Academy.

Trigg County drops to 2-10-1. The Wildcats travel to Caldwell County Thursday.
