With seemingly fewer kids playing sports and many programs struggling for numbers, Hopkinsville’s Spencer Powell is a bit of a throwback. Spencer excels on the tennis court and the soccer pitch for the Tigers, all while performing at a high level in the classroom as well.
As a junior, Spencer bagged a pair of goals with an assist, and he’s already doubled his goal output while helping the Tigers to a 5-5-1 record so far as a senior. The Tigers are chasing the program’s first district title since 2019, when they also advanced to the 2nd Region semifinals.
Spencer enjoyed a stellar junior season on the court, pairing with James Folz to finish runners-up at the region tennis tournament. Spencer was named to the All-Region team, and the duo bowed out in the first round of the state tournament to top-ranked St. Xavier.
When he isn’t on the pitch or the court, Spencer serves up nothing but aces in the classroom and stays busy with extracurricular activities. He is involved with Robotics, Beta, and Key Club, and is a member of the National Honors Society and the Superintendent Advisory Council.
Spencer enjoys math and engineering and cites his family, friends, and teachers as some of his biggest influences. He plans to attend a college with a strong engineering department and would prefer a large campus in a metropolitan area. An engineering degree can open many different career opportunities, and Spencer hasn’t decided exactly what he will pursue.
His hard work over the previous three years allowed him to participate in the Governor’s Scholar Program this summer, and he says there was no better way to spend the weeks leading up to his senior year. Spencer says what he enjoyed most about the experience was “making so many new connections with people my age from all over the state.”
As Spencer and his Tiger soccer teammates try to engineer a return to postseason glory, he has a bright future to look forward to after his time at HHS ends.
