Cathryn Brown’s quest for a second-straight regional championship fell just a few shots short on Monday, but the Lyon County senior captured runner-up honors at the 1st Region golf tournament at the Country Club of Paducah.

Brown carded a 3-over-par 75 on a difficult course that produced just one score that was under par all day.

Marshall County freshman Trinity Beth claimed medalist honors with a 1-under 71.

Brown won the regional title last year at Murray Country Club with a 1-under-par 72.

That was one shot better than Madison Glisson, who was playing with McCracken County at the time, and two shots better than Marshall County teammates Beth and Megan Hertter.

Next up for Brown will be the KHSAA State Golf First Round at Owensboro Country Club next Tuesday, Sept. 27.

Under a new postseason format approved by the KHSAA this season, the top two teams in the region and the next 10 best scores move on to the next round.

Owensboro will host golfers from Regions 1-4 in what is an extra round of the state tourney.

Thirty golfers from each of three State First Round sites will advance to the State Final Rounds in Bowling Green for a total of 90 participants — the top three teams and next 15 individuals from each of the first-round sites.

Brown is expected to be one of the top challengers for the state crown.
