Caldwell County senior Claire Knoth has qualified for the First Round of the Girls’ State Golf Tournament in Owensboro next week despite some struggles at times Monday on the difficult course at the Country Club of Paducah in the 1st Region golf tournament.

Knoth shot a 99 in the regional tournament.

Marshall County’s Trinity Beth posted the only under-par score of the day with a 1-under 71.

Lyon County’s Cathryn Brown was regional runner-up with a 75.

Under the new format approved by the KHSAA this season, the top two teams in the region and the next 10 best scores advance on to the next round.

Owensboro Country Club will host what is essentially an extra round of the state golf tournament this season. Owensboro will host golfers from Regions 1-4.

Thirty golfers from each of three State First Round site will advance to the State Final Rounds Tournament in Bowling Green for a total of 90 participants — the top three teams and top 15 individuals from non-advancing teams from each of the first-round sites.

Knoth qualified for the state tournament last season, shooting a 9-over-par 82 in the regional tournament at Murray Country Club.
