After an up-and-down regular season that saw a coaching change in the middle, the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers will now get the chance to defend their 8th District soccer title. The Lady Tigers outlasted Fort Campbell Monday night 2-1, winning in penalty kicks 4-2.
Taryn Underwood’s goal in the penalty kick round set off a wild celebration for the Lady Tigers one side, while tears flowed freely on the Fort Campbell sideline. Hopkinsville made all four of its penalty kicks, while Fort Campbell missed their first and fourth.
The win for Hoptown avenged a 2-1 loss to Fort Campbell during the regular season.
The Lady Tigers got on the board first in the match. Morgan Woosley attempted to put a long shot from 30 yards out on frame at the 10:00 mark. The shot deflected off the hands of Fort Campbell keeper Emma Gray. Taryn Underwood was in position to play the deflection and found the net to put Hopkinsville up 1-0.
Both teams had chances over the remainder of the first half, but could not get the ball to find the net and the half would end with the Lady Tigers still up 1-0.
The Lady Falcons evened things up at 1-1 early on in the second half when Lily Marrou scored.
Much like the first half, both teams had chances to get to the lead over the final 30 minutes but keepers Emma Gray and Taylor Joachim were up to the challenge and the scored was still 1-1 at the end of regulation.
The two teams played two five-minute golden goal overtime periods, with nothing changing, setting up the penalty kick round.
Hopkinsville improves to 4-11-2 with the win, which advances the Lady Tigers to the 8th District championship for the second year in a row. Hoptown defeated UHA in last year’s title match.
Fort Campbell sees their season end at 8-8-2.
