The Hopkinsville Lady Tigers will send two runners to this weekend’s KHSAA state cross country meet.

Freshman Lauren Mayes and sophomore Rebecca Wood both finished in the top 20 at the Class 3A Region 1 Meet at Marshall County High School Saturday. They both met the qualifying standard to advance.

Mayes finished in 13th place covering the 3.1-mile course in 21:56. Wood ran a time of 22:42 to finish in 20th place. Lucy Spaw of Daviess County won the race with a time of 20:05.

As a team, Hoptown finished in seventh place with 174 points.

Eighth-grader Kaydon Coats just missed advancing to the state meet by two spots after her 27th-place finish in 23:20. Selena Martinez finished in 55th place, Evelyn Bangart finished in 59th place and Alexis Herrera Loveto was 64th.

The Lady Tigers got some bad news before the race when it was determined that senior Harley Samsil would not be able to run because her name was apparently left off the pre-race roster. That disappointing development meant she could not run in what would’ve been her final high school cross country race.

Hopkinsville will run in the Class 3A State Meet Saturday in a field in the middle of Bourbon County as the KHSAA has moved away from holding state cross country meets at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.
