Kentucky fans at Kroger Field Saturday deserved a lot more than what they received from Kentucky against Vanderbilt. (Vicky Graff Photo)
If there is one constant when Kentucky plays Vanderbilt it is the weather. This holds true whether the game is played in Lexington or Nashville. It is going to be cold, rainy and overcast.
Granted, when a game is scheduled for early November a gamble on the weather is likely but just once it would be nice it the dice would roll for an at least partly cloudy dry day.
Traveling into Kroger Field I can usually gauge what the crowd turnout is going to be. Besides the obvious traffic the fans along the streets walking into Kroger Field is an indication. Today was no traffic and a few fans walking. There wasn’t as many cheers from the fans as most of them had hoods and gloves on to keep warm.
There were plenty of empty seats at Kroger Field. I would estimate that if upper level fans all moved to the lower stadium it would have been half full. The fans that showed today are true fans. After all it is cold, it is misty and it is Vandy.
Looking across from the press box fans can be seen sitting on the top row while empty seats surround them in lower seats. Does sitting against the back of the stadium block the wind? Have you always set in that spot and superstitions creep in? Are you just too cold to move?
I would love to know the answers but it is way to much on this day to walk over and climb to the top.
If this was Rupp, from Lexington Herald-Leader writer Jerry Tipton would be having a great time on Twitter with crowd shots. However, this is Kroger Field, it is outside and again it is Vandy.
As halftime approached and the snow started to flurry the crowd started to thin out. This can’t be totally blamed on the weather. It was a frustrating first half of football and Vandy led 7-6 at the half.
The snow quit falling during the third quarter and the Cats kept falling behind on the scoreboard. There is no reason to go into the final details.
The winners today were the fans that stayed until the end. You cheered loud and tried to will the Cats to a victor. Instead of celebrating a victory you witnessed one of if not the worse loss of the Stoop era when Vandy rallied to win 24-21.
Vandy, a team who has not won an SEC game in 26 outings, came into Kroger Field and stopped a streak.
You deserve more, much more.
