Hopkinsville Fends Off Webster County 89-79

Four Hopkinsville players scored in double figures Tuesday night as the Tigers turned back Webster County 89-79.

Antonio Williams scored 24 points and Isaiah Manning added 19 to pace Hoptown, which led for most of the night but could not put the Trojans away until late in the contest.

Daisjaun Mercer scored 16 points off the bench in his first action of the season. Bubba Leavell added 15 points.

Hopkinsville (2-3) quickly opened up a 17-7 lead in the first quarter.

But Webster (4-2) came back to briefly go up 26-25 on a shot from in close by Malakai Orcutt with 5:15 left in the first half.

But Hoptown pushed its lead back out to 44-33 on a 3-pointer by KeiMarion Smith late in the first half before getting to the break with a 44-35 advantage.

The Tigers led by as much as 14 points in the third quarter before the Trojans crept back to within 59-53 entering the fourth period.

Hopkinsville went back up by 11 in the final stanza before Webster made one final run.

An Evan Michalek 3 had Webster as close as 78-73 with 2:16 remaining, but that’s as close as the Trojans could get.

Baskets by Williams and Smith made it a nine-point game at 82-73 and Hopkinsville went on to finish off the 10-point triumph.

Deshawn Murphy led Webster with 21 points. Michalek added 14 points while Markus Austin had 12 and Micah Austin 11.

Hopkinsville has a big 8th District date coming up Saturday night when it hosts Christian County.
