NeVaeh Day and Sarah Harris scored back-to-back baskets down in the paint late in the fourth quarter to put the Christian County Lady Colonels ahead for good as they picked up their third win in the last four games turning back Webster County 51-45 Friday night in Colonel Gym. The win was the first for Christian County over Webster County since January 3, 2012.
The game was tightly contested throughout the second half of play with the score tied seven times over the final 16 minutes. The last tie came at 42-42 just ahead of the baskets from Harris and Day.
Webster County hit a three to cut the lead to 46-45 but the Lady Colonels were able to fend off the rally attempt from the Lady Trojans.
The game started off like Webster County would not need to rally. Behind the sizzling shooting Hannah Yates, the Lady Trojans ran out to a quick 10-1 lead prompting a quick time-out from Coach Kiki Radford. Webster County led 18-8 after the opening quarter.
The Lady Colonels used their defense to begin to fight their way back into the game. NeVaeh Day, DEbony Anderson, and Evanna McGregor turned up the pressure on the Lady Trojan ballhandlers and shut down the good looks for the Webster 3-point shooters as Christian County began to chip away at the lead. By the half, the margin had been cut in half at 24-19.
Coming out of the break, Christian County scored the first five points of the third quarter to even things up at 24-24 and it was game on from there. The biggest lead after that was the final six-point margin to end the contest. Hannah Yates had another hot three-minute stretch for Webster County, but this time the Lady Colonels hung right with the Lady Trojans and did not let them pull back out to another double-digit lead. The third quarter ended with the teams tied at 36-36.
One of the big moments in the game came with 1:20 left in the third when Webster County’s Katelyn Cates fouled out with just four points in the contest.
Lady Colonel point guard Anaysia Bagwell got rolling in the second half, scoring 13 of her 17 points after halftime. Bagwell hit two big threes for the Lady Colonels to help them stay in position to close out the game. NeVaeh Day and Sarah Harris combined for 14 points over the final 16 minutes.
In addition to Bagwell’s 17 points, Evana McGregor finished with 11 points. NeVaeh Day also reached double figures with 10.
Webster County was paced by Hannah Yates with 21, including five made three-pointers. Jaycie Wright added 5 points for the Lady Trojans.
