
Christian County scored 30 points in the paint against University Heights Academy Friday but none bigger than Prince Northington II’s bucket with two seconds left that gave the Colonels a 57-55 win over the Blazers.
Derrell Bateman’s 3-pointer with 1:28 left tied the game at 55. The teams exchanged missed shots and a miss on the front end of the bonus. After a timeout with 15 seconds left. Christian County inbounded the ball to Northington, who faked a handoff at the top of the key and drove to the right side of the lane. His runner bounced and then hung on the rim before falling through for the game-winner.
The two-point win was Christian County’s second over a district opponent in three weeks. The Colonels edged Hopkinsville 62-60 on Dec. 17.
UHA held an early lead in the contest as Gavin Grubbs’ 3-pointer put the Blazers up 14-8 with 3:32 left in the opening quarter. UHA wouldn’t get another bucket for nearly eight minutes, The Colonels took advantage and used a 21-1 run to take a 29-15 lead over UHA.
The Blazers outscored the Colonels 16-5 to end the half, with Cameron Brown hitting two of UHA’s four triples in the final four minutes of the half.
The largest team either team enjoyed in the second half was four points by UHA twice. The game featured seven ties and eight lead changes.
Northington scored seven points off the bench for the Colonels. Breland Morrison paced three Colonels in double figures with 14 points and eight rebounds. Jordan Miles scored 13 points, and Derrell Bateman scored 10 points and had a game-high 16 rebounds as the Colonels controlled the boards 46-29.
Gavin Grubbs led the Blazers with 18 points. Quinton Quarles hit four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points, and Cameron Brown added 10 points off the bench.
UHA hit 9-of-23 from the arc and was 8-of-13 at the free throw line. Christian County was just 4-of-15 from behind the arc but knocked down 15-of-20 free throws.
UHA returns to the floor Saturday at Crittenden County before starting All A Classic play next week.
Christian County will host Henderson County Tuesday.
