
The Lyon County Lady Lyons and the Livingston Central Lady Cardinals are soon going to get tired of seeing each other. The two teams met Tuesday night in Eddyville for the third time in just 12 days. This time the result was a bit different.
Lexi Holland made one of two free throws with 4.5 seconds to go to seal a Lyon County win as the Lady Lyons came from behind in the final quarter to take the 42-38 victory.
Both teams had trouble finding their footing in the early going of the game. The two teams combined for two made field goals in the opening quarter as Livingston Central took a 4-3 lead. Trinity Taylor had the lone goal for Lyon County, while Emersyn Ramage had the made basket for the Lady Cardinals.
The difference in the opening quarter was that Livingston Central was 2 of 4 from the line while the Lady Lyons were 1 of 2.
Lexi Holland gave Lyon County a spark at the beginning of the second quarter. Holland knocked down a three and scored on a runout to put Lyon County up 8-5. Courtney Collins found opportunities inside and Lilly Perry, masked up with a broken nose, drained a three as the Lady Lyons found a bit more offensive consistency and took a 17-12 lead into the locker room at the break.
The Lady Lyon defense was doing its job on Livingston’s Victoria Joiner in the opening half. Joiner was held to three points, coming on 3 of 6 at the free throw line.
Both teams had trouble at times with ball security in the opening half, but neither was able to make the other one pay for the ballhandling miscues in the first 16 minutes of the game.
The Lady Cardinals came battling back as the third quarter got underway. Behind the efforts of Maggie Downey, Emersyn Ramage, and Aubrey Leahy, Livingston tied the game at 23-23 and 25-25, before Ramage broke open on a backdoor cut late in the quarter to put the Lady Cardinals up 27-25.
Trinity Taylor kept the Lady Lyons within earshot in the third scoring seven points in the quarter.
The Lady Cardinals extended the lead to 31-28 early in the final quarter. Lyon County responded with a 7-0 run to take the lead for good at 35-31. Livingston would cut the lead to two on a couple of occasions in the final quarter but could not get back to the lead. Free throws were a big part of the comeback for the Lady Lyons as they knocked down 8 of 13 at the line in the fourth.
Trinity Taylor led the Lady Lyons with 11 points, nine of them coming in the second half. Ella Defew added 10, eight in the second half of play. Lexi Holland just missed double figures with eight points.
Emersyn Ramage was the only Lady Cardinal to reach double-figures with 12 points. Victoria Joiner added nine points, but had only one made field goal in the game.
Lyon County improves to 5-11 on the season. They are set to be back in action Friday night when they host Trigg County.
