Rockets Pull Away Late for District Win Over Trigg

1-18-gobin

Turnovers and missed free throws continue to be the bane of Trigg County’s basketball existence in 2022-23 and both were on display in the Wildcats’ 67-55 district loss at Crittenden County Tuesday.

The Wildcats played most of the first half without leading scorer and rebounder Jhaden Vaughn who turned his ankle three minutes into the contest.

Trigg stemmed the tide and stayed within two points of the Rockets without Vaughn.

He returned in the second half but Crittenden County began making shots, hitting 5-of-11 from the field and forcing four Trigg turnovers to extend its lead to 38-32 after three quarters.

Trigg hit 9-of-18 shots in the fourth quarter but couldn’t overcome missing the front end of three consecutive 1-and-1s and a 3-of-9 performance from the charity stripe.

Crittenden meanwhile, hit 8-of-15 from the field and 11-of-16 at the free throw line in the decisive fourth quarter that saw them outscore Trigg County 29-23.

Crittenden County, who had scored 65 points combined in its previous two games, got 21 points from Travis Champion and a 14-point, 15-rebound night from Case Gobin.

Luke Washer led Trigg County with 14 points and seven rebounds. Hunter Reynolds added 12 points, and Vaughn scored 11 points and pulled down six rebounds in 18 minutes of action.

Trigg County hit 15-of-29 shots inside the arc but just 6-of-27 from 3-point range. Crittenden also scored 11 points off 19 Trigg turnovers.

Crittenden County wrapped up the district’s No. 2 seed with the win, while Trigg County will need a win over Livingston Central on Jan. 31 to secure the No. 3 seed which would guarantee a rematch of the schools in the first round of the district tournament.
