Trigg County Snaps Five-Game Skid at HCA

2-2-stewart

On a night when both teams had starters unavailable to play, the Trigg County Wildcats used a solid third quarter to deal the Heritage Christian Academy Warriors a 60-40 setback Thursday night in Hopkinsville.

Both teams were down a starter, and Trigg County was without head coach Mason Burgett who fell ill before the game. Assistant coach Charles Terrell and Athletic Director Matt Wilder guided the Wildcats to the win which snapped a season-long five-game losing streak.

Trigg County scored the first 13 points of the game and led wire to wire. Despite the slow start, Heritage Christian slowly chipped away at the Trigg lead, drawing to ten points after one quarter and to 23-20 on a Camden Higgins layup with 2:09 left in the half.

The Wildcats hit four free throws to end the half and grab a 27-20 lead at intermission.

A Manny Diaz bucket with 5:09 showing on the third quarter clock got HCA to within 31-22, but the Warriors wouldn’t hit a basket for the next 6:25. Meanwhile, Trigg County finished the quarter on a 14-1 run with half the points coming from Luke Washer.

Up 22 points after three quarters, the Wildcats led by as many as 25 points.

Trigg County shot 57-percent from the field in the second half outscoring the Warriors 33-20. Trigg outscored HCA 36-24 in the paint.

Luke Washer scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half, while Jhaden Vaughn scored 22 points and pulled down 17 rebounds for Trigg County.

Jason Leek led HCA with 18 points, with Carlos Robles scoring nine points and adding 18 rebounds.

The win was Trigg County’s first this year when failing to score 70 points.

Heritage Christian Academy returns to KCAA play Saturday at Bethel Christian Academy.

Trigg County will travel to Grayson County Saturday for the first-ever meeting between the schools.
