Lady Wildcat Win Forces Three-Way District Tie for Second Place

The Trigg County Lady Wildcats’ 37-35 win over Livingston Central Monday night has thrown a wrench into the seeding process for the 5th District Tournament. And the Lady Wildcats would have it no other way.

The win snapped a three-game district losing streak and forged a three-way tie for second place in the district among Trigg County, Livingston Central, and Lyon County.  Crittenden County has already wrapped up the No. 1 seed.

Livingston Central scored the first three points of the game but never led after that. The Lady Wildcats, who came into the contest putting up 23 three-pointers a game, worked hard to drive the basketball into the paint.

The result was a 45-percent shooting clip in the first half and nine free throws. Trigg led by as many as seven points in the first half and carried a 20-14 lead into the locker room.

The result of Trigg’s drive game also saw Livingston’s top two scorers – Victoria Joiner and Emersyn Ramage – pick up three first half fouls and a fourth in the third quarter.

However, Livingston cut into the Trigg lead with Joiner on the bench. Ramage stayed on the floor and scored Livingston’s final five points of the quarter to get the Lady Cardinals within 26-24 heading into the fourth quarter.

Livingston Central tied the game at 26 early in the fourth quarter. Trigg reserve Lillian McKelvey scored a bucket and was fouled. She missed the free throw but Olivia Noffsinger grabbed the miss and scored the putback for a 30-26 lead with 6:42 left.

Joiner would add a three-point play to make it a one-point game, but McKelvey again scored and Trigg hit 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Noffsinger scored 12 points and added 11 rebounds. She has now moved past her former teammate Marleigh Reynolds into fifth place on Trigg County’s all-time scoring list with 1,343 points. She needs 39 points to move past Christina Ezell into fourth place.

Landi Rogers scored seven points and McKelvey gave Trigg four points and six rebounds in 11 minutes of action.

While Trigg County didn’t hit a 3-pointer for the first time this year, they shot 52-percent inside the arc and outscored Livingston 26-16 in the paint.

Ramage and Aubrey Leahey each scored 11 points for Livingston Central, who has dropped 11 of its last 12 games to the Lady Wildcats.

A three-way coin toss will be held at the district meeting Wednesday to determine seeding for the district tournament, scheduled for February 20-24 at Livingston Central High School.
