
It was not much of a first half for Mayfield’s Lay Mayes Saturday in the Lady Cardinals game against Lyon County in the Akridge Ace Jam. In fact, Mayes, who was averaging better than 16 points a game was shut out by the Lady Lyon defense for the first 16 minutes. But then you play the game for 32 minutes.
Mayes scored 14 points, all in the second half, as the Lady Cardinals came from behind to knock off the Lady Lyons 54-52.
The Lady Lyon defense did a good job early on limiting the number of good looks for not just Mayes, but the entire Mayfield offense. The Lyon County defense limited Mayfield to just nine points in the first eight minutes as the Lady Lyons took a 10-9 lead.

The Lyon County offense found its stride a bit in the second quarter. With Trinity Taylor attacking the basket and Piper Cotham knocking down some outside shots, the Lady Lyons led by as many as 8 points in the second quarter. Taylor and Cotham had 9 points each in the opening half.
Mayfield did manage to score the final three points of the half to trim the lead to 26-21 going into the break. The Lady Cardinals were able to hang around in the first half due to their 3-point shooting. Mayfield hit four shots from behind the arc in the half, while only making three from inside the line.
The Lady Cardinals tied the game up early in the third at 35-35, but Lyon County was able to get the lead back thanks in big part to the play of Trinity Taylor and Lilly Perry. Lyon County took a 35-31 lead into the final quarter of the game.
But then the Lady Lyons lost their shooting eye a bit and Mayfield made their move behind the efforts of Mayes and Lexi Feagan. Mayfield outscored the Lady Lyons 14-6 to open the final quarter and took a 45-41 lead. From there, the Lady Cardinals used some timely free throw shooting to hold on to the lead.

Lyon County had a chance to tie the game trailing 53-50 in the final 20 seconds but the Lady Lyons shot and made a two to cut the lead to 53-52. Mayfield made 1 of 2 at the line with 2 seconds left giving Lyon County a chance but Lilly Perry’s baseball heave was off the mark and the Lady Cardinals held on for the win.
Trinity Taylor topped the scoring column for Lyon County with 18 points. Piper Cotham finished with 12, including three made 3-pointers, before fouling out late. Lilly Perry added nine, all in the second half.
Lay Mayes was among four Mayfield players in double figures with 14, all in the second half. Adeley Smith, Lexi Feagan, and Skylar Mandry all had 11 points.
Lyon County falls to 9-14 with the loss. The Lady Lyons are back in action Monday when they kick off the final week of the regular season by hosting Calloway County.
