Caldwell Wrestlers Qualify 7 for State First Round

A pair of individual runner-up finishes helped Caldwell County to a fifth-place finish in the team standings at the Region 1 wrestling tournament Saturday at Christian County High School.

Logan Brown and Cofy Walls each reached the championship match of their respective weight classes.

At 120 pounds, Brown won his first two matches by pin before running into Union County’s Jayden Raney in the finals. Raney is the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the state at 120 while Brown is ranked 10th. Raney took the regional championship match with a first-period pin.

At 132, Walls picked up a pair of technical-fall wins to reach the finals against Union’s Hunter Jenkins. No. 3-ranked Jenkins edged No. 5 Walls with a sudden-victory takedown to win the match 4-2.

Three Tigers wrestled to third-place finishes in the region.

Andre Carter went 3-1 at 113 pounds, taking the third-place match by pinning Juan Cannon of Hopkinsville in 48 seconds.

Collin Teutsch went 4-1 at 126, dropping only a 5-4 decision in the semifinals. In the third-place match, Teutsch decisioned Holden Schneider of Christian County 9-5.

At 144, Timothy Nichols was 3-1, decisioning Hunter Hawthorne of McCracken County 14-0 in the third-place match.

Two other Tigers placed fourth, giving Caldwell seven qualifiers for next week’s KHSAA State First Round event at Louisville Atherton.

Justin Klidzejs was 2-2 at 106 pounds. He dropped a narrow 9-8 decision to Breylen Clifford of Union in the third-place match.

Cole Sherill was fourth at 215 after going 3-2 on the day. He was forced to forfeit to Gillam Nicodemus of Daviess County in the third-place contest.

Caldwell’s Bradley Peters at 150, Dawson Hoard at 165 and Aiden Asher at 285 also wrestled in the regional tourney but each went 0-2.

Union County won its 20th straight regional championship on Saturday with 323.5 points. Paducah Tilghman was runner-up with 256.5 while Christian County took third with 200. McCracken County totaled 143.5 points to place fourth while Caldwell was fifth with 127. Fort Campbell was sixth with 103 points.
