After leading the University Heights Academy Blazers to a 19-win regular season, a win over defending 2nd Region champ Lyon County, and the 2nd Region All A championship, UHA head basketball coach Melvin Brown has been honored by the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches. The KABC announced Friday morning that Brown had been named as their 2nd Region coach of the year.

Brown guided the Blazers to a 19-10 record in his second season on the job. UHA is among the teams expected to contend for the 2nd Region title.

UHA won this year’s 2nd Region All A Classic championship, upending Lyon County in the opening round. The Blazers beat Raceland in the opening round of the state tournament before losing an epic four-overtime game to Owensboro Catholic in the quarterfinals.

Among the Blazers’ other wins this season are victories over Henderson County, Murray, Madisonville, Hopkinsville, and Paducah Tilghman.

The Blazers will open post-season play Monday when they take on the Hopkinsville Tigers in an 8th District semifinal contest.
