John Calipari not sure if injured players will play Friday or not

Will Cason Wallace, Sahvir Wheeler or CJ Fredrick play Friday night when Kentucky opens Southeastern Conference Tournament play?

Maybe. Maybe not.

Odds are even coach John Calipari doesn’t know and he shed very little light on their status Monday night during his weekly radio show. Wallace and Wheeler did not play at Arkansas Saturday because of injuries and Fredrick managed only 15 minutes.

Calipari said none practiced Monday but no other player did either.

“Our practice was a film session. Things I want to add to how we’re playing and a situation we may confront and it was about an hour. So, they did not practice,” Calipari said.

The team will practice today and Wednesday before heading to Nashville where it likely will practice Thursday.

“They’re going to have to start practicing. You don’t just, ‘Okay, I’m ready for Friday.’ You’re going to have to get on the floor at some point and we’ll see,” Calipari said.

“I can’t tell you. I sent CJ (a text message) and said, ‘How you feeling?’ He said, ‘I’m hurting a little bit.'”

Calipari said last week he thought Wheeler would be out two weeks after first missing games with an ankle injury and then having surgery on his tailbone Wednesday. Wallace was hurt early in the second half of last week’s loss to Vanderbilt. Fredrick has been dealing with a rib injury for about four weeks.

  1. Our defense against Vandy on Senior night was awful and it looks like we will play them on Friday. Cason or no Cason, the entire team needs to play better on that end of the floor. If Cason is less than 90%, let him rest. If he is 90%, let him play backup minutes if necessary on Friday. The same goes for Saturday and Sunday, if we advance. He should not play starter’s minutes unless he is 97% or better.
