Lady Lyons Experience Growing Pains in Opening Loss to Marshall County

Jason Collins knows his young Lyon County softball team will have growing pains this year as they look to rebuild off a 70-win stretch over three seasons.

The Lady Lyons coach also doesn’t expect the same early season mistakes to plague his team in May.

On a night when the first pitch temperature was 39 degrees with a wind chill of 32 degrees, Marshall County had a little more steam in their bats as they handed Lyon County a 16-0 loss Monday in Eddyville.

The Lady Marshals rapped out 13 hits over four innings – 10 of them singles.

Lilly Perry pitched around danger in the first inning. With a runner at first, Allicen Harris smacked what looked to be a two-run homer for Marshall County but the 10 mph crosswind from left blew it foul.

After she walked, the next batter hit a ground ball that nipped a Lady Marshal runner for an out.

Perry got out of the inning unscathed but her fortunes did not carry over to the second inning.

Marshall County scored eight times in the second inning highlighted by a two-run single by Gracelyn Darnall. Marin Oakley added an RBI double as the Lady Marshals sent 11 batters to the plate.

Harris finished with two hits and four RBI, and Oakley and Anna Vasseur added a pair of hits and three runs knocked in.

Lyon County, who started four eighth graders and two freshmen, managed three singles off Harris, who struck out eight and issued just one walk.

Three Lyon County errors led to four unearned runs.

Lyon County will play at Union County Tuesday.
