Abigail McPherson and Addison Woodall teamed up at the plate and in the circle Monday to lead the Todd County Central High School softball squad to a run-shortened 16-0 home win over Hopkinsville. The four-inning victory helped the Rebels end a three-game slide.
McPherson (three strikeouts) and Woodall (four) each pitched a pair of innings in the shutout. They also combined to allow just three hits and one walk. Offensively, the duo each scored two runs, accounted for an RBI, and drew a base on balls, finishing a combined 2-for-5 at the dish.
As a team, the Rebels (8-7) took full advantage of their nine hits, which came from eight different players. Woodall, Abby Williams, and Rylann Griggs each doubled during the Elkton affair, helping TCCHS rack up 12 total bases. Dakotah Gammon went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI as the eight-hitter.
After Todd Central and the visiting Tigers played a scoreless inning in the first, the Rebels surged ahead for good with nine runs in the bottom of the second. That offensive onslaught was highlighted by a two-run Williams double that made it 8-0. Hoptown also committed all four of its defensive errors during that fateful second inning, helping Todd County Central build a large lead.
Karli Herrera ended the game via mercy rule with a two-run single in the fourth.
Hopkinsville, which was attempting to win for the fourth time in five games, got a lead-off single from Jakayla Grubbs to start the contest but never found much rhythm beyond that. Grubbs went 2-for-2; Esther Pepple had the other HHS hit with a two-out single in the top of the second inning.
Shaniyah Straight made her seventh straight start in the circle but did not earn a decision. She struck out one, walked five, and allowed four hits in two innings. Of the nine runs Straight allowed, just one was earned. Bailee Ladson (0-1) gave up five hits and seven runs in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss.
The Tigers (3-4) will try to get back on the horse at 6 p.m. Tuesday during a regional matchup at Hopkins County Central, while Todd Central (8-7) will try to continue the momentum at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Logan County.
