The Trigg County Lady Wildcats nearly pulled off one of ‘those’ kind of comebacks Monday evening at the Trigg County Recreation Complex. After seeing the Russellville Lady Panthers score the first eight runs of the game, the Lady Wildcats made the Lady Panthers hold on tight for dear life as Trigg would the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh before Russellville escaped town with an 8-6 win.
The Lady Wildcats came out of the gate slow, especially defensively. Trigg County was charged with four first-inning errors as Russellville took a 6-0 lead after 1/2-inning. Another error in the top of the second, helped the Lady Panthers extend the lead to 8-0 after an inning and a half.
But then, the Lady Wildcats got honed in, and Russellville lost its offensive momentum.
MaKenna Hendricks’s RBI single in the bottom of the second got the rally started and cut the lead to 8-1. Tember Oliver came up with a two-out, two RBI single in the bottom of the third and trimmed the lead to 8-3, and you started to think “well now.”
Kiley Slone stole home in the bottom of the fifth, and the lead was down to 8-4. A single, an error, and a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth and it was 8-5. Madilynn Smith then steals home and it is 8-6. Trigg would bring the tying run to the plate, but the Lady Panthers were able to end the threat.
Trigg would get a hit batter with one out to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom half of the seventh, but Russellville pitcher Madison Penrod was able to get the final two outs of the game to finally end the Trigg County threat.
Rylee Hendricks ended the game 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored for Trigg County. Veyda Grinols was 2-2 for the Lady Wildcats.
Tember Oliver was incredible in relief for the Lady Wildcats. The 8th grade hurler kept the Lady Wildcats in the game after she entered in the third. Oliver pitched five innings, giving up no runs on just one hit, striking out three, and walking only one.
Avery Wade was charged with the loss, but the defense’s rocky start hindered her starting effort. Wade went two innings giving up the eight runs, but only three of those runs were earned.
Trigg County is set to be back in action at the Complex Tuesday evening when they host Webster County.
