Missed Chances Curse Trigg in Road Loss to Murray

Carson Tucker’s two-out, two-run triple in the sixth inning spoiled a strong pitching performance from Aaron DeSpain and handed Trigg County a 3-2 loss Tuesday in Murray.

Avery Starks led off the inning with a single. He was forced out and left the Wildcats an out away from their first win over Murray in five years. Collier Crouch singled to right ahead of Tucker’s go-ahead triple.

Trigg County had the tying run at second with one out in the seventh but a double play ended the threat and the game.

It was one of a couple of baserunning miscues in the contest for the Wildcats. A pickoff at second happened in the first inning ahead of a Mac McCormick double and kept Trigg off the scoreboard. Trigg had another runner picked off in the fifth inning.

Trigg scored both its runs in the second inning. Thomas Hawkins had an RBI single and Matthew Leeper plated a run with an RBI groundout.

The Wildcats had a chance to break the game open in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with no outs. But a ground out and two strikeouts doused the scoring threat.

DeSpain allowed eight hits and three earned runs over six innings. He struck out five and walked two and was saddled with the tough-luck loss.

McCormick had two of Trigg’s five hits.

Tucker had two hits for Murray (7-8) – both triples from the leadoff spot.

Trigg County (8-8) will host Muhlenberg County Monday.
