Trigg County and Lyon County are a pair of young softball squads still trying to determine the art of winning games.
On Tuesday, both teams had multiple chances in their district showdown in Eddyville, but the Lady Lyons rallied for a 6-5 win over Trigg in 10 innings.
Lauren Davis cut down the go-ahead run at the plate off a fly ball in the top of the 10th inning to keep the game tied at five. The Lady Lyons scored the game-winner on a misplayed fly ball in the home half.
It was the fourth error the day for the Lady Wildcats, with half of Lyon County’s runs unearned.
Trigg was an out away from ending a seven-game losing streak to the Lady Lyons as they carried a 3-1 lead into the final frame. Piper Cotham and Courtney Collins coaxed two-out walks, and Destiny Cayce followed with a two-run double to tie the game.
With the international tie-breaker rule in place, each team scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings before Lyon tallied the game-winner in the 10th inning.
Trigg led 2-1 after six innings and an Emma West RBI single in the seventh inning appeared to give the Lady Wildcats the insurance they needed. West finished with three hits and three RBI as the top four batters in the Trigg lineup – Veyda Grinols, Rylee Hendricks, Kady Fuller, and West – combined to go 9-for-18 with four runs batted in.
The Lady Lyons gave Cayce solid defense behind her with just one error. Davis and Brenna Breitrick each had two hits for Lyon.
The loss was a tough one for Trigg, who played the first of three straight district games and saw their district mark evened at 1-1.
Lyon County improved to 2-1 in district play and kept alive a shot at no worse than a three-seed in the district tournament. Livingston Central is 3-0 and sits atop the district. Crittenden County is 0-4.
The Lady Wildcats (10-11) host Crittenden County Wednesday in a game moved up from Thursday due to the weather. Trigg needs a win to clinch no worse than a three-seed in the district tourney. They edged Crittenden 1-0 on March 30.
Lyon County (6-10) will host Webster County Thursday.
