Freshman Hadley Hargrove had her fingerprints all over Livingston Central’s 7-1 softball win Monday over Lyon County. In addition to doubling and driving in a pair of runs, Hargrove struck out five and earned the complete-game victory in the circle to help the Cardinals defeat the Lyons for the third straight time.
After the Lyons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Courtney Collins’ one-out RBI single, Livingston tied the game at 1-all on one of two Lyon County errors in the bottom of the third, and then took the lead for good on Hargrove’s two-run single to center field.
All five Lyon hits against Hargrove were singles. two of which came from Lilly Perry. Piper Cotham drew the lone Lyon walk. Hargrove (10-3) threw 100 pitches exactly, delivering strikes on 72 of them. Lyon tried to manufacture a comeback in the top of the seventh, but Brenna Breitrick was thrown out at home to end the game after Cayelyn Downing singled with two outs.
Livingston Central, which had dropped three of five games coming in, improved to 15-5 overall in 2023 and 9-1 against 2nd Region opponents. Destiny Cayce (2-4) took the loss after being knocked out two innings in. She allowed five hits and four runs. Perry walked three and gave up three runs in four innings of relief.
Lyon County (6-12) plays its final 11 games of the regular season on the road and continues that stretch at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Christian County. Since the 2000 season, the Colonels are 15-1 against the Lyons, with the last LCHS victory in the series coming in 2019.
