Caldwell’s First All-Girls Wrestling Program Established

Caldwell County’s first-ever all-girls wrestling team is making its way through its first season.

The Western Kentucky Valkyries Wrestling Club is made up of local youth who have been competing in tournaments around the area.

Coach Clay Overbey, a former Caldwell County High School wrestler, tells how the girls’ team came together…

 

Overbey says the team has competed in events around Kentucky and in Tennessee…

 

Next up for the Valkyries Wrestling Club is a trip to Owensboro on May 20…

 

Overbey says the level of interest locally in girls’ wrestling has not surprised him…

Youngsters on the team include Westinn Overbey, Riley Overbey, Claudia Furgeson, Una Furgeson, Freya Bruce and Jayde McIntosh.

The team typically practices four days a week during competition season. Practices are held at the middle school wrestling room Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 5-6:30 p.m.
