Kentucky basketball can be overwhelming to some players with the fan and media attention but potential transfer Keshad Johnson played in the national championship game for San Diego State last season.

“Obviously he played in front of some really big crowds (at San Diego State). But at Kentucky every game is almost a Final Four type setting or big crowd,” said Dan Manning, Johnson’s AAU coach.

“He wants that and to be in a situation where gyms are packed, fans are screaming. That appeals to him. His best game in the tournament was a national championship game. He thrives for big moments.”

The 6-7 Manning started all 39 games last season when he averaged 7.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 22.2 minutes per game.

Johnson is scheduled to announce Saturday where he’ll play next season. His final choices are UK, Arizona, USC, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. He’ll be home in Oakland with family for his graduation party and decided that was the right time to announce where he’ll play next year.

“Ultimately it will be who puts him in the best position for his future and that could be beyond basketball,” Johnson said.  “It’s a tough decision for him. He’s in a unique position.

“Winning is so important to him and being able to compete for a conference championship and national championship is important to him. The role he plays along that journey will be the most important thing for him. He will  just reflect on his visits and determine which one has what he’s looking for in his future and who will help him get that.”

Manning did also note that a playing style that is a “little faster pace” than what San Diego State played would help highlight other things Johnson can do well.
