Caldwell County Takes Third at Girls’ Region Track Meet

The Caldwell County girls’ track and field team put together one of its best finishes at the region meet in recent years Monday.

The Lady Tigers had three automatic qualifiers for next week’s Class 2A State Meet in Lexington. Caldwell finished in third place as a team with 70 points, trailing only Calloway County (212) and Paducah Tilghman (117).

The top two finishers at the region automatically advance to the state meet, while the next ten best times/distances statewide also advance.

Avery Wells knocked nearly three-quarters of a second off her personal best time to finish in second place in the 200-meter dash in 27.36 seconds. Her time was the fifth-fastest 200-meter time in school history.

Shaely Thibodeaux finished fifth in the 100-meter dash (13.39) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (28.31).

Mariah Merritt was seventh (13.75) in the 100 meters and finished sixth in the 400 meters (1:07.74).

Kylee White ran a 2:38.75 in the 800 meters to finish in fourth place. Autumn Fox was eighth in 2:59.60.

All four of Caldwell County’s relay teams came in third place and nearly established new school records. They must now wait and see if they are among the ten fastest at large times in the state who will run at the state meet next week.

The 400-meter relay time of 52.65 seconds was fourth fastest in school history.

The 800-meter relay time of 1:49.96 was the second fastest in school history, just missing the record set in 1995 by .56 seconds.
