
Boys’ volleyball was one of four sports the Kentucky High School Athletic Association approved to sanction beginning with the 2024-25 school year so long as 42 schools commit to playing. The KHSAA requires 15% participation from its member schools for consideration in sanctioning.
The number of boys’ teams playing in the state has more than doubled to 30 this past season.
Girls’ volleyball began earnestly in western Kentucky in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association hosted a boys’ state tournament in the spring as the sport continues to grow nationwide.
Over 100 programs – including five in Kentucky – offer boys’ volleyball at the collegiate level.
In a survey of schools asking about a commitment to offering the sport, only Fort Campbell indicated they would play boys’ volleyball in 2023-24. Livingston Central said they could offer the sport in 2024-25.
Hopkins County Central, University Heights Academy, and Webster County did not reply.
The rest of the school said no to boys’ volleyball.
The sport would be played in the spring parallel to baseball and track and field.
