The Hoptown Hoppers only had two hits over the first three innings on Sunday against visiting Dubois County, but they made them count in a seven-run third on the way to a 9-2 victory. The win put an end to a two-game skid to move the Hoppers to 9-13 overall.
The Hoppers didn’t make much noise in their first two at-bats and trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the third. A pair of one-out errors put them in business, and another Bomber miscue on a bunt by Sam Perkins got the Hoppers on the board.
Luis Vergara tied it at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly, and a hit by pitch pushed a run across to put Hoptown in front 3-2. With two outs and the bases juiced, Manuel Villalobos deposited an 0-2 offering over the left-centerfield fence to put the Hoppers in control for good.
Hoppers’ starting pitcher Brady Ginaven allowed a pair of earned runs on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts before handing off to John Girard. Girard earned the win with three scoreless frames, surrendering only two hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Chase Cummings led the Hoppers with two hits, and Perkins and Robert Estrada each had a hit.
Stone Silver took the loss for the Bombers, allowing seven unearned runs on two hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts. Liam Samuels worked four innings in relief, giving up two earned runs on two hits with two walks.
