The University Heights Academy Lady Blazers and the Henderson County Lady Colonels came into the 2023 volleyball season tied for first in the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association 2nd Region pre-season rankings. That tie was resoundingly broken by the Lady Blazers Thursday night.
UHA traveled to Henderson and came away with a big sweep of the Lady Colonels and, at least for this first week of the season, have now positioned themselves as the 2nd Region favorites.
The Lady Blazers were firing on all cylinders coming out of the gate, taking the first set 25-16. The second set was a bit more competitive early in the set but still ended up with UHA taking a 25-18 win to go up two sets to none.
University Heights did not let up off the gas in the third set as the Lady Blazers completed the sweep with a 25-17 win.
Julia Thomas led the attack for the Lady Blazers with 13 kills. Chayse Gilliland added nine. Olivia Oakley chipped in with four and Claire Chewning had three more.
Evelyn Cotthoff was tops for UHA in digs with seven. Sarah Peebles had a huge night setting the table for her teammates, finishing with 26 assists in the match.
The Lady Blazers improve to 2-0 with their second straight sweep. They are off to Owensboro Friday and Saturday to take part in the Apollo Summer Slam.
